Two KZN students achieved a national ranking within the top 5% in six or more subjects, placing them on the IEB Outstanding Achievement List. They are Kiara Whiteboy and Jan Kirsten from Reddam House Umhlanga.
The highlights of the Class of 2023 students at Reddam House schools in KZN are:
- The 116 students across the two schools received 336 distinctions, an average of 2.9 distinctions per student.
- A total of 39 of the cohort of 88 Reddam House Umhlanga students and six students from Reddam House Ballito’s 28 matric class achieved four or more distinctions.
- One student received eight distinctions, six students achieved eight distinctions, two students received seven distinctions, and nine received six distinctions.
- 99% bachelor pass rate and 100% pass rate across the two KZN schools.
- An overall average of 74.96%, the highest provincial average across the Inspired Education Group in South Africa.
Reddam House Umhlanga
One student - Jan Kirsten - achieved nine distinctions while five Reddam House Umhlanga students achieved eight distinctions – Caitlin Roden, Lubna Peeroo, Minyang Li, Kiara Whiteboy and Kate Searl. Tristan Daly and Kushiv Singh received seven distinctions.
Caitlin Roden, who spent her entire school career at Reddam House Umhlanga, is the second highest Reddam House achiever in KZN. She plans to study for a Bachelor of Accounting at Stellenbosch University and already has a confirmed placement to do her articles with PWC after completing her studies.
A-aggregates at Reddam House Umhlanga increased to 40.91% of the grade and As per student increased to 3.16. Their overall overage increased to 75.67%.
Reddam House Ballito
Reddam House Ballito achieved a 100% bachelor pass rate and 2.14 distinctions per student.
Jan-Christiaan Jacobs from Reddam House Ballito says, “Oh my word – eight distinctions for matric! I’m so proud of myself for working hard and consistently and maintaining my course. This year, I’m studying mechatronical engineering at Stellenbosch University, which is step one in my dream of becoming a Formula 1 engineer.”
Tristan Daly from Reddam House Umhlanga, who achieved seven distinctions, is also the youngest person ever to qualify as a premier league cricket umpire. Talented both academically and in sport, Tristan embodies the Reddam House ethos of respect, support, kindness, and nurturing well-rounded individuals, and has been accepted to study medicine. Tristan also received a place in the Top 1% of IEB candidates per subject nationally for Business Studies.
Another Reddam House Umhlanga Class of 2023 achiever – Sam Mdakane, who received five distinctions – has a remarkable story of triumph over adversity. He was discovered singing in a rural school by Georgie Carter, who went on to become his benefactor, getting permission from his grandmother to pay for him to attend the Drakensberg Boys Choir. Sam joined Reddam House Umhlanga in Grade 10 with continued support from the Carters, and has gone on to excel both academically, achieving five distinctions in his matric results and a leadership position as a matric representative, which is the equivalent of Head Boy, and in the arts. Sam was a member of the KZN Youth Choir and Youth Orchestra and has been accepted to study music at TUKS. Commenting on his hopes for the future, Sam says, “I hope to become the first black conductor in South Africa” Sam’s results include 88% for music, 88% for maths literacy, 91% for business studies, 90% for isiXhosa, and 86% for life orientation.
National results
Nationally, Reddam House South Africa’s Class of 2022 achieved results beyond expectations across their eight schools located in three provinces (Western Cape, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal), with a 100% pass rate in the IEB exams and 1,132 subject distinctions, averaging out at three distinctions per student. A total of 33% of all students achieved four or more distinctions.
IEB rankings
Reddam House students obtained a total 68 rankings in the top 1% of IEB candidates per subject nationally and 14 students received rankings on the IEB’s Outstanding and Commendable Achievement lists.
